Although it cannot be proven, Baby Showers are believed to date back to the ancient Egyptians or Romans who celebrated a baby's birth by giving handmade gifts to the mother.  During the 19th century, new mothers and their babies would often be secluded for a month. Then they would make their debut at a party or religious occasion such as a christening or baptism. In the Victorian Era, female friends would often throw a tea party just before the birth of the baby. It was an opportunity for the expectant mother to enjoy time with her friends before the baby arrived.   Although Baby Shower Favors for the guests were not a common practice, it was tradition to bring a practical gift for the mother.  Generally, only women were invited because babies and children were considered to be woman's business. And in most cases, showers were only given for the first born child.
