Some Baby Shower Fun Facts -
Although it cannot be proven, Baby Showers are believed to date back to the ancient Egyptians or Romans who celebrated a birth by giving handmade gifts to the mother. During the 19th century, new mothers and their babies would often be secluded for a month. Then they would make their debut at a party or religious occasion such as a christening or baptism. In the Victorian Era, female friends would often throw a tea party just before the birth. It was an opportunity for the expectant mother to enjoy time with her friends before the baby arrived. Although Favors for the guests were not a common practice, it was tradition to bring a practical gift for the mother. Generally, only women were invited because babies and children were considered to be woman's business. And in most cases, showers were only given for the first born child.
The modern Baby Shower as we know it, gained popularity after the Baby Boom. Previously, hosted mainly by the upper class, today's baby showers are enjoyed by all. And now is almost always held before the babies arrival. And, many of today's showers have come to include both men and women.
